Here's What You'll Learn ... ... about Stance
Learn how much space you should have between your skates based
on your body size. Learn the appropriate amount of knee bend you will need for
optimal balance, based on your body size. Learn how to maximize the amount of net you cover without giving
up anything in terms of making a save. Learn the appropriate amount of waist bend you will need for
optimal balance, based on your body size. Learn how a "save only" stance can severely restrict and impair
your movement. Learn the appropriate stick length you should use for optimal
balance, based on your body size. Learn how your stance directly affects the time it takes you
to recover. Learn the appropriate blocker positioning for optimal balance
and quickness based on your body size. Learn the impact a good balanced stance can have on puck handling
and controlling rebounds. Learn the appropriate glove positioning for optimal balance
and quickness based on your body size. Learn how to adjust all of the above as your body grows in order
maintain optimal balance. Learn the on-ice and off-ice drills you'll need to put it all
together for quicker movement and for making saves with speed
and control.

"...the goalie's stance is so important because everything starts
from a good balanced stance. But how do you learn to adjust your
stance so that it is balanced to the point where you have optimal
quickness in your movement without giving up any quickness when
it comes to making saves? Trial and error seems to be the most
common method. But this is rarely effective because the pre-adult
goalie's body dimensions are changing so rapidly, what might have
worked as a squirt, no longer works as a midget or even a bantam.
Ask 10 goalies what determined their stance and what adjustments
they will have to make when they grow 6" to 10" taller. Then ask
them the same questions about their sticks. I don't think you
will be surprised to find out that they really don't know. When
going over the goalies' stance, not only are the goalies shown
how to easily determine the proper balance for their stance based
on body size, but they also learn how to adjust their stances
as their bodies grow. Following the stance discussion, photos
are taken so that an analysis of each goalies' stance can be completed.
This detailed write-up along with the photos are given back to
the goalie so they get a chance to see what I am seeing and make
the necessary adjustments. This also gives us a year to year
record of any adjustment made." - Stefan Popa
