Info on Breakaway Workshops
Since the breakaway is such a high profile situation, we need
to provide goaltenders with something that works better than "guessing",
which unfortunately, is what goaltenders chose to do most often.
At all the Breakaway Workshops we present the specific timing,
positioning, movement, coordination, and recovery factors involved
in giving the goaltender absolute control over any breakaway situation at any level of competition.
We take the goaltender through each step, break it down, and demonstrate
how to practice the techniques properly. We will also teach the
goaltender, regardless of their level of competition, how to practice
on their own, the areas most important to their individual success
both on and off the ice.
In addition, we encourage the goaltender to bring a parent or
a coach (both if possible) so that when the goaltender goes back
to his or her team, they have reinforcement which is consistent
with what they are learning at the workshop. Although this is
not mandatory, it is highly recommended!
At every location, all on-ice instruction and all offf-ice discussions are presented personally by Coach Popa, University of Michigan Goaltending Coach '84-'93.
